Majek Fashek

Majek Fashek, born Majekodunmi Fasheke on March 7, 1963, in Benin City, Nigeria, was a renowned reggae musician, songwriter, and guitarist. He gained prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, blending reggae with traditional African sounds, which helped to popularize the genre within Nigeria and across Africa. Fashek is best known for his hit songs "Send Down the Rain," "African Message," and "Holy Spirit." His 1988 album, *Prisoner of Conscience*, is particularly notable, featuring tracks that address social issues and spirituality, resonating with many listeners and establishing him as a voice for the marginalized. His impact on music is significant, as he introduced reggae to a wider African audience and influenced many contemporary African artists. Despite struggles with personal challenges and health issues later in life, Fashek’s work remains influential, earning him a legacy as a pioneer in fusing reggae with African rhythms and themes.
